As Your Referee: Arbitrator or Adjudicator
Arbitration is a private, confidential and voluntary dispute resolution process, which involves judicial determination of the dispute by an independent third party.
The arbitrator acts as a private judge and gives a legally binding decision known an award. An arbitral reference may involve one arbitrator or an arbitral tribunal consisting of more than one arbitrator (usually three). The arbitral award is based on evidence put before the arbitrator or arbitral tribunal by the parties or their representatives.
Adjudication takes the form of arbitration, but is less formal, and is designed to resolve less complex disputes. The time within which an adjudication award is to be rendered may be limited by statute (usually to twenty-eight days).
